The E-Volunteer’s Role
We are looking for an e-volunteer passionate about web design to help support one of our partner organizations. The Canadian Interagency Security Advisory Forum (CISAF) is looking to revamp their website (http://www.cisaf.ca/) or build a new one from scratch. CISAF is a collective of Canadian INGOs who came together in the fall of 2013 to strengthen the way that we care for our overseas staff and volunteers in the areas of safety and security. Their website acts as a platform for the discussion of safety and security issues and concerns relevant to the members, advice and technical support either directly from members or through referrals, and promote learning by sharing tools, guidance and standards and by organizing, promoting or advertising safety and security learning events.
As a Web Designer/Developer e-volunteer, you will be responsible for the design, layout and coding of the website. As an e-volunteer, you will be involved with the technical and graphical aspects of the website - how the site works and how it looks. Some update on content will also be needed, content will be provided to the Web Designer. Decision regarding templates, website hosting system and structure will have to be made.
As an e-volunteer, you will:
-Work in team with the partner coordinator to understands the needs and expectations of the partner;
-Suggest and advise on the best free hosting system to use, templates, possible designs for the website;
-Write the programming code, either from scratch or by adapting existing website software and graphics packages to meet organizational requirements;
-Reorganize the content offered in an intuitive and user-friendly way;
-Test the website and identify any technical problems;
-Upload the site to a server and register it with different search engines;
-Optional: Propose new logo for the partner.
Essential Academic Qualifications:
-Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science or Management Information Systems strongly preferred. Three to five years in .NET development experience in lieu of education degree.
Essential Professional Background:
-Minimum of two to three years of Internet Development experience using .NET or Java technologies.
-Advanced concepts, practices, and procedures within the web-development field. Experience with Visual Basic, VB .NET, SQL, ORACLE, HTML, and XML.

E-Volunteers are expected to supply their own basic home office equipment, Internet and have a moderate knowledge of computer technology. Some of our partners are located in remote areas with unreliable internet connection. Consequently, it is reasonable to assume that when working with the partners, emails will not be responded to immediately. For most of our partners, this is their first experience working with e-volunteers and flexibility and patience is a valuable e-volunteer characteristic.
