Advanced R&D Optical Scientist/Engineer (Test)

About You:

You have a thirst for knowledge with a broad technical background and thrive in a fast-paced high-tech development environment. You excel at taking a high-level goal with no obvious solutions, quickly becoming an expert in the relevant areas of technology, and creating proof-of-concept prototypes as quickly as possible.   You will be part of the Advanced R&D team at North focusing on prototyping, testing and characterizing advanced optical components.

What You’ll Do:

Hands-on research, modelling and prototyping of advanced optical components for near-eye displays with a focus on evaluating said components both from a display/system perspective and a metrology/sub-system perspective.

  • Within 2 weeks
    • Understand next generation optical architectures
    • Familiarize yourself with in-house testing and design software
    • Contribute to system and subsystem evaluation/validation
  • Within 4 weeks  be able to diagnose and troubleshoot advanced optical component issues
    • Work with other researchers to develop models/explanations for display artifacts
    • Write custom code to simulate components effects
    • Perform experiments and simulations to quantitatively measure effects and inform design
    • Work with electrical, mechanical and product teams to develop requirements, fixtures and test equipment.  Provide feedback to manufacturing teams
  • Within 8 weeks, own portions of prototyping/testing setups and analysis codebase.
    • Design the custom benchtop setups, working with other internal teams
    • Design the experiment to prove or disprove the riskiest aspects of the technology
    • Write and maintain custom analysis code for optical components
  • Within 12 weeks have multiple working benchtop prototypes under “ownership”.
    • Obtain modified or custom components where needed
    • Work with the rest of the product teams to integrate the technology in the latest prototypes
    • Efficiently test possible in real-world usage on a wide variety of people
  • Within 6 months, have working prototypes in real-world form factor
    • Obtain modified or custom components where needed
    • Work with the rest of the product teams to integrate the technology in the latest prototypes
    • Efficiently test in real-world usage on a wide variety of people.
  • Within 6 months work directly with suppliers to improve design and performance of display
    • Interface directly with vendor, iterate on requirements and specifications.

What You’ll Need:

  • Knowledge of Python both for data analysis, modelling,  and test automation
  • Experience with debugging complex precision optical setups
  • Experience with optical metrology tools such as interferometers, polarimeters, ellipsometers, photodiodes, OSA, AFM, confocal microscope.
  • Experience working with cross-functional team

Bonus points for:

  • Experience with Zemax or Code V
  • Experience with electromagnetic modelling of nanoscale structures, optical films,  holographic elements or diffractive optics.
  • Experience calculating scattering properties using RCWA, FDTD, FEA

Feel like you can’t tick all the boxes above? If you have some of the skills and experience that we’re looking for and are willing to use your talent to learn the rest, we encourage you to apply!
