Systems Design Engineer

About You:

You are an engineer who excels at optimizing complex designs and managing multiple stakeholders.  You can synthesize information quickly and turn multiple good ideas into a single great system. You know how to incorporate process and parametric indicators into design tradeoffs and can build tools to find balance manufacturing and performance. You love to build things that last, and always find ways to optimize the processes you leave behind.

What You’ll Do:

  • Within 3 weeks,
    • Familiarize yourself with the Focals product requirements and manufacturing test and processes
    • Understand the the Focals system architecture and critical to function design constraints
    • Enumerate all of the major design and manufacturing issues and build a history of previous yield improvement activities
  • Within 6 weeks,
    • Identify test coverage gaps based on the implicit and explicit design requirements.
    • Take ownership of the sustaining systems-engineering role as the product transitions into volume production
    • Lead prioritization of engineering sustaining activities, with inputs from manufacturing, program management, and product management
  • Within 3 months,
    • Develop plans to address yield improvement opportunities with a significant cost impact
    • Develop test strategies to ensure manufacturing ramp does not result in product quality escapes
    • Provide an iteration of DFM requirements to next-generation product based on learnings from manufacturing and concept design
  • Within 6 months,
    • Assume leadership of DFM requirements and implementation
    • Incorporate DFM capabilities and risks into a set of future product DFM strategies

What You’ll Need:

  • Demonstrable experience is required in the following areas:
  • Maintaining a bird’s eye view of the entire project from a technical perspective to ensure that subsystems function well together
  • Work hands-on debugging hardware and optimizing test systems
  • Diving deep into l implementation issues as they arise
  • Strong communication skills in order to get agreement between Product, Design, and Manufacturing

Bonus points for:

  • A combination of otop-mech, opthalmic, and/or electrical system design
  • Program or technical project management
  • Experience working with high-volume manufacturing
  • Optical measurement techniques
  • Display Quality measurement techniques
  • Statistical process control & process development (eg. asq green/black belt)
  • System modelling

Feel like you can’t tick all the boxes above? If you have some of the skills and experience that we’re looking for and are willing to use your talent to learn the rest, we encourage you to apply!
