  • We’re looking for a smart, innovative, experienced communicator who’s looking for a challenge to add to our team in either Grand Rapids, Michigan or Waterloo, Ontario. In this role, you will work on documentation and training for a complex Java EE software platform. You don’t need to be an expert Java programmer, but the ability and willingness to read, compile, and modify Java code (and maybe even write your own code samples) is a major asset. You might be a former developer with exceptional writing and communication skills, or you might be an experienced technical writer with a strong interest in coding and API/SDK documentation.

As part of the Software Center of Excellence at Dematic, the Global Software Training team of technical writers is responsible for delivering compelling, informative content for our standard software products. As a technical writer on the Global Software Training team, you’ll get the chance to design and develop online training and other technical information that helps Dematic engineers implement and support Dematic iQ, our flagship warehouse execution software.

The content that you create will be made available in a variety of formats, including eLearning modules, videos and other multimedia, tutorials, web sites, online help, and PDF. You’ll also have the opportunity to work closely with distributed development teams from the start of the software development process right up until the final release.

You’ll be most successful if you have a passion for working on highly technical products and making information available to software engineers in innovative and engaging ways.

  • Key Responsibilities:

    • Build strong partnerships with software engineers, product managers, and other experts to develop technical information

    • Learn about Dematic iQ and become self-sufficient in using software with simulators and test equipment

    • Conduct needs analysis sessions for various internal and external audiences to develop a deep understanding of our users and their learning needs

    • Work on multiple scrum teams to plan and deliver learning materials for each software release

    • Use minimalist instructional design principles to develop highly effective materials

    • Design and publish multimedia, on-product help, eLearning, developer guides, and API documentation

    • Come up with innovative approaches to how we help people learn and use our software

    • Travel occasionally to other Dematic offices and customer sites (particularly in the first six months)

    • Bachelor's Degree in a relevant field, such as English, Communications, Mathematics, Engineering, or Computer Science

    • Minimum 5 years’ experience working with technical products (hardware or software)

    • Exceptional writing skills

    • Familiarity with object oriented programming, Java, REST APIs, or other programming skills

    • Proven ability to plan and deliver work within an agile development process

    • Proficiency with content authoring, publishing, and multimedia development

    • Strong analytical and problem solving skills with a high attention to detail

    • Exceptional ability to work with cross-functional teams to build partnerships and get things done

    • Understanding of adult learning and instructional design principles

    • Experience in material handling systems or similar industry would be an asset

    • A good sense of humor and an ability to have fun!
