Controller & Financial Analyst Job description

The role of the Controller & Financial Analyst requires the ability to perform detailed accounting and analysis leveraged with dynamic business insight to help drive the operational and financial decisions of the company. The role requires significant cross-functional efforts to identify, establish and maintain the appropriate systems while performing key processes in support of the organization’s vision and strategic plan.

Essential Function

The essential functions of the Controller & Financial Analyst are to oversee and perform all required accounting and taxation functions; maintain the accounting database and reports essential to consolidated reporting; prepare and update the annual budget together with senior management; analyze and lead budget review meetings and discussion; and improve the company's financial performance by analyzing results, pro-actively identifying variances and trends, and recommending and implementing actions with management. Responsibilities include preparing actual monthly results; maintaining key accounting records and reports; maintaining a company-wide reporting structure; analyzing actual results with plans and changing business conditions; working closely with auditors; preparing various tax schedules; and liaising with external tax accountants. Tasks include, but are not limited to:

  • Be a collaborative member of the Corporate Finance team by preparing monthly journal entries, financial statements, month-end reporting packages, variance analysis, and account reconciliations;
  • Prepare quarterly reporting requirements of a public company such as roll forward schedules for fixed assets, debt, allowance for doubtful accounts, intangibles, and tax schedules;
  • Maintain corporate accounting general ledgers and account reconciliations;
  • Prepare quarterly and annual public company reporting of management discussion and analysis;
  • Champion and coordinate the consolidated budgeting and forecasting processes;
  • Facilitate reporting requirements of financial and operational metrics (KPIs/key metrics);
  • Maintain the structure and integrity of financial systems for company-wide general ledger and corporate reporting database;
  • Prepare and maintain weekly cash forecasting details;
  • Review company-wide bank reconciliations;
  • Maintain and update quarterly internal control process documentation;
  • Maintain corporate compliance records;
  • Maintain oversight and review of local accounting functions and deliverables such as account reconciliations and journal entries;
  • Prepare and maintain required quarterly and annual audit schedules.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Strong working knowledge of financial analysis and accounting
  • Attention to detail; highly organized
  • Proficiency in public company reporting, including preparation of IFRS financial statements, and taxation
  • Strong work ethic, honesty, and integrity
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Ability to manage deadlines and workflow
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills

Educational Requirements

  • Business or Accounting degree from an accredited college/university and CA or CPA
  • 5+ years of progressive accounting and finance experience
  • Advanced Excel and financial modeling skills

  • Must be legally authorized to work in Canada
  • Ability to travel approximately 10% domestically and internationally
