The Ask

As a Mechanical Design Engineer at 2G Robotics, you will be responsible for the full life cycle of mechanical systems, from requirements definition, through design (including FEA and GD&T), overseeing initial manufacturing builds, prototype testing, and debugging any issues that arise in the field. Your work on mechanical systems will focus on custom underwater housings for sensors, optics, motors and other electronics that are able to withstand the rigors, corrosion, and pressures of deep subsea environments. Your approach and attention to detail will help the company meet its high quality standards.


The Details

  • Use SolidWorks to design and implement robust products that deliver an exceptional experience for our customers

  • Source components, choose vendors, and define manufacturing processes, working closely with Purchasing to source key components

  • Conduct FEA, optical analysis, and tolerance stackup analysis

  • Complete engineering drawings using GD&T and standard dimensioning practices

  • Complete thermal, quality and reliability testing on new and existing product designs

  • Lead the build of first prototypes and ensure that the build process is transferred smoothly to Production, through both documentation and training

  • Assist with the evaluation and selection of key technologies that can be used in our products

  • Perform root cause analysis of product failures


The Must Haves:

  • Degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field with at least 4 years experience

  • Proven experience in designing machined parts in SolidWorks, including 3D modelling, drawings, GD&T and FEA

  • Proven experience in test plan design and execution

  • Strong understanding of mechanical and thermal properties of different materials and alloys

  • In-depth knowledge of metal fabrication and manufacturing processes

  • Experience assembling electromechanical systems

  • Excellent organizational and communication skills, with the ability to multitask and prioritize issues in a fast-paced environment

  • Quality-oriented mindset and exceptional attention to detail


The Nice to Haves:

  • Experience with optical components and opto-mechanical design: cameras, lasers, lenses, etc.

  • Project management experience

  • Experience with sourcing components from standard mechanical vendors

  • Experience with underwater housings or pressure vessels

  • Experience in marine/outdoor environment

  • Experience with vibration and shock analysis and testing

  • Experience with electrical and software design, such as Arduino-style projects
