System Architect

Role Summary/Purpose:

The System Architect is accountable for the overall architecture, system design and technical decisions for a designated product line. The incumbent is a key member of NDI’s Technical Architecture team ensuring their designated products meet the needs of customers both today and in the future.  The incumbent is the first point of contact for the rest of the organization when technical expertise is required. The incumbent collaborates with all members of the product family development team to drive innovation, design, and implementation of his/her designated products.  This role requires someone who is passionate about pursuing new ideas, is strong at solving complex problems and has a willingness to challenge the status quo to create remarkable solutions.  The successful candidate will be highly organized, results-driven and effective at presenting intricate ideas and concepts to others.


What You’ll be doing:

  • Accountable for the overall architecture, design and implementation of a designated product line ensuring that the product meets the customer’s needs, is manufacturable and meets cost targets. Approves all key technical decisions related to architecture, design, implementation, and testing.
  • Responsible for critically reviewing the market requirements using design thinking techniques to ensure they are desirable, feasible and viable.
  • Assists product managers in establishing product concepts via user scenarios and product stories that provide clear vision for the development team.
  • Responsible for establishing the system level requirements, high-level architecture, system partitions (into logical blocks) and product KPIs.
  • Collaborates with subject matter experts to ensure the systems and sub-systems integrate smoothly to meet product and customer expectations.
  • Accountable for the development, review, and approval of the detailed technical specifications/architecture for the product family.
  • Accountable for the effectiveness and suitability of the overall verification and validation test plan. Ensures test plan is adequate in approach and sufficiently detailed such that the product meets the customer needs.
  • Accountable, in collaboration with a Software Architect, for the design, development, and maintenance of the product family verification test platform, e.g. automated build, unit, integration, performance, and regulatory testing.
  • Accountable for the top-down (hazard analysis) and bottom-up risk analysis (FMEA & pFMEA).
  • Acts as the technical expert and liaison with NDI’s customers; attend trade shows and conferences to gather technical market information as required.
  • Works with the project manager and product family team to develop project plans, work breakdown structures and assign work to individuals appropriately.
  • Works closely with the designated software architect for the architecture elements associated with all software and firmware components of the products.

What You’ll Bring to the Role:

  • Seven to ten years of relevant work experience with R&D experience in technology areas related to design of complex systems, embedded software development, hardware design engineering, and mechanical design engineering.
  • University Degree in Physical Science, Mathematics, Engineering or related disciplines, or equivalent experience
  • Programming skills in C/C++ required; Matlab, Python, CUDA, and Java are an asset
  • Experienced in computer vision, signal processing, algorithm development.
  • Strong analytical skills with the capability to develop feasible system designs.
  • Exceptional problem-solving skills are mandatory.

Desired Characteristics/Additional Assets:

  • Proficiency in developing medical devices or industrial metrology
  • Hardware design experience
  • Prior experience using mechanical, optical and/or magnetic tracking systems and/or machine vision
  • Understanding of optics with experience in designing cameras and/or projectors
  • Proficiency in developing medical devices or industrial metrology
