Solutions Developer (Co-op)


FairVentures is the innovation initiative of Fairfax Financial Holdings Ltd., with the mandate to research, develop, partner and invest in innovative solutions to support the Fairfax family of companies.  We have our innovation and research Lab at the Communitech Hub in Kitchener-Waterloo, Ontario.  

The FairVentures Lab team works with a variety of Fairfax companies, mainly in the property and casualty insurance, reinsurance, restaurant and retail industries to aid and inspire innovation.  We are a team of design, technical, data and business professionals engaged in sustaining, efficiency and disruptive digital innovation initiatives. We’re diverse, passionate about our work, and love to have fun.

Job Responsibilities

We are looking for students to be part of the team working in our innovation and research lab on the following objectives:

1. Disruption prevention by

  • Researching emerging technologies such as blockchain, AI, and mixed-reality that could lead to innovations in various industries, including insurance, restaurant, and retail
  • Providing insight and assistance to Fairfax subsidiaries so they can adapt
  • Building prototypes to demonstrate the potential of emerging technologies

2. Increase new growth opportunities and operational efficiencies at Fairfax subsidiaries by

  • Building tools that can be shared with Fairfax companies
  • Designing services, architecture and platforms to enable innovation for Fairfax subsidiaries

3. Promoting innovative practices throughout Fairfax global operations by

  • Contributing to the Fairfax community forums
  • Guiding subsidiaries’ efforts with new technologies

Given our mandate, our team requires a breadth of skills. Individuals may have experience or skills in the areas listed below:

  • General software development using modern tools and technologies such as databases, source control, IDE, deployment to cloud infrastructures.
  • Web and Mobile application development
  • Project Management
  • New Product Development

Background/Experience Requirements

  • Working towards a degree in Engineering or Math
  • Experience working in a startup or small group environment
  • Knowledge of agile engineering practices, scrum methods, user-centered design practices and lean principles
