Network and Systems Specialist

We require a qualified individual to assume responsibility for planning, configuring, implementing and maintaining enterprise wired/wireless network infrastructure as well as research and development of new and expanding networking technologies.



Administration of Unix/Linux/Windows servers with a primary focus on enterprise services (example: DHCP, NTP, RADIUS, TACACS, DNS, Network Monitoring, Syslog) provided to Conestoga employees and students

Managing effective & stable operation of College Voice/Data communications networks

Providing technical support for mobile device connectivity to the College wireless Infrastructure

Installation & maintenance of battery backup systems (UPS) to ensure continuous & reliable network operations

Redesigning network infrastructure to accommodate private IP addressing scheme

Development of network security policies through the use of access, monitoring, and controls

Administration & troubleshooting of wired and wireless College network including, but not limited to: Network architecture, configuration, and deployment of network appliances

Documenting network changes & design improvements to reinforce solid troubleshooting techniques

Communicating regularly with consultants, suppliers & manufacturers for technical support and pricing estimates on products and services

Working with senior IT department staff & management to plan upgrades & improvements to network infrastructure to meet future requirements

Investigating & recommending improvements to network monitoring & management solutions

Developing & maintaining a high level of knowledge concerning Network Administrator capabilities for advanced computer networks

Researching emerging technologies and systems related to the college infrastructure requirements

Communicating with vendors/system engineers on products and services related to these areas, assessing benefit against college requirements




Three year diploma/degree in a Computer Sciences or Information Technology related field

Three years of demonstrated experience with networking equipment, enterprise class servers, UNIX/Linux/Windows Server OS, and supporting technologies

Preference given to candidates with CISCO or Juniper certification

A good knowledge of back-end enterprise services (DHCP, DNS) as well as a strong knowledge of networking best practices, modern network design, and network troubleshooting

Well-developed analytical problem-solving and decision-making skills to identify problems, determine possible solutions, and select the appropriate action

Good planning and organizational skills to establish priorities

Must be able to adjust priorities to meet deadlines

Well-developed verbal and written communication skills to be able to present technical information to a not so technical audience

Ability to think and act quickly is essential

Excellent knowledge of data communication concepts and protocols (e.g. TCP/IP, SNMP, BGP, SMTP)
