User Experience Developer

We require a qualified individual to assume responsibility for the development and support of the College’s websites and web applications including design strategy (target audience, user experience, information and search engine goals, analytics, etc.), information architecture, visual design, usability, accessibility, and web development. This individual will collaborate with staff from the Conestoga College community, as well as with Conestoga’s Web Services and IT teams. The incumbent is responsible for the client-side scripting of College websites and web applications as well as providing web development connecting the College’s websites and web applications to the College’s CMS.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Plans site design by clarifying goals of key stakeholders, conducting research (web analytics, competitive best practices, technology review), and designing functionality that meets accessibility requirements and usability best practices
  • Develop and coordinate the updating of Web Standards Guidelines
  • Communicates with management and faculty to determine their website needs
  • Plans the long term look and feel of Conestoga’s websites and web applications including the content flow (in collaboration with the Content Editor), design, and visual look to best market the College to our targeted demographic.
  • Presents initial design ideas to clients, soliciting feedback, and refining concepts
  • Continuous improvement of websites and web applications by benchmarking other websites, reviewing analytics, and maintaining user-friendly experiences
  • Regularly monitors and analyzes website analytics making recommendations for improvement based upon findings
  • Performs ongoing analysis of website including keyword research, SEO, link structure, and information architecture to improve website analytics and overall user experience
  • Continually updates knowledge by participating in educational opportunities, reading professional publications/blogs, maintaining personal networks, and participating in professional organizations
  • Acts as a thought leader in advancing user experience and functionality of the site
  • Builds the initial static website framework and creates templates for in-house staff to use in the creation of additional pages
  • Uses current web design frameworks and creates prototypes to proof-of-concepts
  • Ensures that web accessibility guidelines are met
  • Develops visual content/graphics (logos, images, icons) by coordinating with third party vendors (stock sites for web) and college/industry partners
  • Draws up detailed website specifications and designs sample page layouts including text size and colours
  • Designs graphics, animations, and manipulates digital photographs for maximum impact
  • Maintains site appearance by developing and enforcing content and display standards
  • Works with Web Developer to implement static website into web application
  • Uses source control for all website and web application work
  • Investigates server-side options to compliment client-size development
  • Reviews all new College websites and web applications changes to ensure quality assurance standards are met prior to moving to production
  • Tests websites and web applications to ensure design standards are met and functionality is as expected
  • Ensures all testing is complete before final client sign-off

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Three year Diploma/Degree in Web Design, Interaction Design, Web Development, or Graphic Design
  • Five years of experience designing and developing complex websites with understanding of corporate branding and layout in digital media
  • Understands current web standards/web design to create applications that automatically conform to multiple screen sizes/devices, and best practices around UI/UX design
  • Experience with web design frameworks, responsive web design, and client-side development.
  • Proven computer skills and proficiency in HTML5 (HTML, CSS, JavaScript), advanced knowledge graphic design, and other web prototyping tools and frameworks for rapid web concept development
  • Knowledge of Content Management Systems (SharePoint, WordPress), source control (Git, TFS) and server-side development (C#, Java) are considered assets
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with a high degree of tact
  • Strong project management skills including organizational and time management skills; exposure to both Agile and Waterfall settings
