Manager, Software Development

Reporting to Director, Software Development and R&D, the Manager, Software Development will have an extensive development background and years of experience leading multiple development teams throughout all stages of the software development lifecycle.  You will manage and lead teams comprised of highly skilled developers in building and supporting our core products using a variety of technologies.

 

You will join the R&D team and will, in a partnership with your Product, Architecture, Development and QA colleagues, be responsible for delivering certainty to our internal and external clients.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Understand client and business needs and expectations thoroughly, ensuring that all solutions meet current and future needs and are always solving a problem and/or introducing an improvement
  • Manage all aspects of development and technology implementation across multiple initiatives concurrently
  • Demonstrate leadership to all of those who you interact with, including local and remote teams, Product, Architecture, QA and other internal business teams
  • Demand quality in our products, throughout our processes and in all collaborations with others
  • Always have a clearly defined plan to successfully execute on immediate goals which meet communicated timelines
  • Work with other development leads and teams to identify and resolve dependencies and issues before impacting timelines
  • Contribute to the definition of our product roadmaps and technology visions, ensuring plans to execute today and tomorrow always contribute to each of those
  • Track and communicate progress on all projects and to multiple types of audiences, ensuring a high level of transparency at all times
  • Work with your peers in Product, Architecture, Development and QA to identify needs, brainstorm solutions, allocate resources, define and execute on plans, communicate progress regularly and deploy the solution successfully
  • Manage both up and down, ensuring that all parties have the information required, without asking, at the time in which it is required
  • Be a leader in technology, understanding where we are and where we should be in the future, working with others to educate and adopt where and when appropriate
  • Remain engaged in the technology and solution
  • Evaluate new technology and tools, proposing methods to integrate alongside the support of business needs
  • Demonstrate the ability to speak about any topic and answer any question related to your area at any time
  • Act as the ultimate escalation point for your area, accepting ownership and demonstrating accountability for getting the escalation resolved in a timely and technology appropriate manner
  • Help to define and manage the budget, applicable to your teams, working alongside your colleagues on shared budget items
  • Lead all aspects of hiring and performance management of your teams
  • Improve your teams, the department, the product and processes everyday, never shooting an idea down and always looking for a better way
  • Actively seek to understand the career path and needs of all members of your teams, acting as a business and technology mentor and guiding them to meet and exceed their goals
  • Participate in and lead activities to improve team morale, during and after work hours

QUALIFICATIONS:

All applicants must posses the following:

  • A University degree or College diploma in Computer Science/Programming or equivalent professional experience
  • 5+ years experience in leading software development teams in a technology focused company
  • Demonstrated experience and understanding of distributed processing and open source technologies
  • Ability to hire up and develop teams to match current and expected technology demands
  • Knowledge of industry best practices and tools used in high-quality product development
  • Desire and ability to influence an organization to adopt new technologies, tools and best practices
  • Excellent written and verbal interpersonal skills

Ideal candidates also demonstrate the following:

  • Experience in professional development utilizing Mobile (Android/iOS/Xamarin) and Java 
  • Working knowledge of PostgreSQL, Linux, AWS, Kafka, Kubernetes, Docker, Java, Service Oriented Architecture, Angular
