Hardware Engineer

At FLIR - Waterloo, we design and build high-performance, high-reliability unmanned aircrafts (drones) for Government Defense and Military, which help save lives and livelihoods around the world.

As a Hardware Engineer on the Hardware Development team, you will develop the electronics for our aircraft, payloads, and accessories. You will help to improve already shipping products, design new ones, and debug all manner of electronics problems along the way.

Description

This role is for a hardware engineer who has already designed and shipped a few products in their career. You will need to exercise good judgement, take responsibility for your design decisions, and drive solutions cross-functionally. You will need to design the electronics to handle high temperatures and vibration while keeping the mass and cost low. You will be challenged to meet aggressive product delivery schedules without sacrificing reliability or design performance.

The Hardware Engineer will:

  • Design the electronics (boards, flexes, cables) for aircraft, payloads, and accessories
  • Take the electronics design through schematic, layout, multiple prototype cycles, verification, and into production
  • Select components (everything from resistors to radios) and document your designs through schematics, block diagrams, and technical design documents
  • Guide PCB layout of complex multi-layer rigid, flex, and rigid-flex boards
  • Work closely with other hardware engineers and multi-disciplinary teams (RF, mechanical, product, software, verification, etc.)
  • Drive board level verification and validation activities including signal integrity and power integrity checks
  • Work with external vendors to resolve board DFM, fabrication, component and test issues
  • Be hands-on in system level and board-level debugging of prototypes and in-market products
  • Research and prototype new technologies for integration in FLIR products
  • Optimize designs for reliability, cost, weight, testability, and manufacturing
  • Participate in the hardware team’s design review processes
  • Some travel may occasionally be required. (typically once a quarter or less)
  • Other tasks as assigned

Required Skills

  • BASc or B.Eng degree in electronics, electrical engineering, mechatronics, computer engineering, or equivalent
  • 5+ years’ experience in electronics design
  • A demonstrable passion for building and creating things
  • Strong ability to work well with others
  • Strong ability to learn and improve skills
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English
  • Excellent debugging and problem-solving skills
  • Experience with common signal busses like I2C, SPI, USB
  • Experience designing power supplies with switch-mode and LDO converters
  • Hands-on debugging skills with common lab equipment

Preferred Skills/Experience

  • Experience with Altium Designer is a plus
  • Experience with BLDC motor drivers is a plus
  • Experience with high-speed signal integrity and eye diagrams is a plus
  • Experience with flexible circuit design is a plus
